You Need to Be Better

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve ever received, was in a moment of failure. I walked into an interview for medical in psychological evaluation. The lady was sitting down calmly reading through paperwork. That paperwork with the basic information about me at the age of 23.

As I approach the table where she was sitting, that was set up for all interviewees to walk up towards so she can evaluate your energy and presence when entering the room. Little did I know what was about to come out her mouth was going to change the way I look at life.

I’m going to fail you now sit down

The Medical and psychological examiner had a welcoming smile. Seemed like I was going to have a great interview. The moment I sat down, she said it’s a pleasure to meet you. I really like your smile nice shirt I want you to know something before we begin, you failed. There’s nothing more gut wrenching, then to hear those words after months of one-on-one interviews and trying to identify all the places you live going up as well as job she worked for.

I kept a smile on my face. She told me that’s a really good trait but it’s OK to show your emotion so I can better understand how we can move forward from this and get you to where you need to be in regards as an adult that wants to become a police officer. In a nutshell, I was not in the shape I needed to be, nor was I ready for the street fight where I couldn’t knock someone out in the goal was to put him in handcuffs in the back of the car.

From failure to clarity

The conversation got deeper about who I am my physical appearance, and why I thought I’d be ready to have a moment where it was fight or flight being that I was not in the best shape. Are you still on your way all the police officers that’s on me for the first time would look right at my belly. No keep in mind it wasn’t that big but it was big enough for them to realize that I would be their back up one day and would I be able to actually back them up or were they need to call me the ambulance?

The medical evaluator or examiner basically told me what Manny didn’t want to tell me you weren’t ready for a world where physical fitness is the leading reason why many men and women in the field of law enforcement die either on the street or at home.

She told me let’s take a look at where you are in your life where you could’ve been. What could I have been doing, and ask ourselves am I making the right decisions for my health and wellness in general. she reminded me that all these things as I become a young man he’s going to be imperative for me to understand and really learn the job or the career path I want to take on.

See the forest for the trees

After failing my background post medical evaluation and went into depression. I even worked out so hard on the keto diet. I end up falling asleep at the wheel and hitting a park car. My car was old, so it was considered on savable and the amount of money I would get will not help me get another one. So I moved and did nothing for three months.

Finally, it hit me the moment of clarity I needed from the failure I just experienced it was time to grow up. I released my running shoes and started running daily. Of course I started walking first jogging to sprinting. Interval, training became my way in life as well as heart rate monitoring to make sure I was in the fat burning level.

I soon learn 38 pounds later but anything is possible if you just focus, but more importantly, if you learn from where you field and continuously evaluate and reflect your life situation. You also want to at times audit your life, and make sure that you were picking yourself up where you fell down. The goal should be to always get better even if you were ready at the top.

Conclusion

You’re probably asking, so what was the specific best advice you ever received? The best advice I ever received a summary of many things that happened during the timeline above. Here’s what it was and is. Sometimes you have to stop where you are in life and recognize what you are doing to get to where you want to go. Be sure that you have a goal and has specific things you were going to work on to attain that goal.
