You Failed Before you even Started

You’re probably wondering what does he mean when he says you failed before you started? We’ll, let me explain. Ever wonder why something didn’t work out? For example, the weight loss journey you went on? The workout plan you you just did. One main reason I can relate to is, lack of consistent effort?

I look at life as a value stream. What happens upstream can affect downstream. What value added activities are supporting the future activities and if they are not supporting future outcomes, do I continue to do them?

Life’s Value Stream

A life value stream is a series of activities that provide value to your life, the lives of your loved ones, and the world around you. It is a technique of viewing your life as a series of interconnected actions leading to the desired outcomes.

As we all have experienced in our day to day lives, things tend to happen we feel we could’ve been prevented or even mitigated. That sleepy morning, we knew we should’ve went to bed, however we decided to stay up and finish that amazing Netflix documentary or show series. That 10 minute instagram feed scrolling that made us late or we forgot what we were about to do. what’s the value add?

Creating a life value stream can help you to:

  • Determine your basic values and goals.
  • Determine your priorities.
  • Make smarter choices about how to allocate your time and energy.
  • Make your life more full and meaningful.

Start by establishing your key values in order to construct a life value stream.What matters most to you in life? What do you hope to accomplish? After you’ve defined your fundamental values, you may begin to consider the activities that will assist you achieve your objectives.

Divide your objectives into smaller, more doable tasks. Then, lay out the sequence of actions required to complete each phase. This will provide you with an accurate view of your life value stream.

You may use your life value stream to guide your decision-making and ensure that you are focusing your time and energy on the things that are most important to you.

Here’s an example:

Core Values: Health, Happiness, and success

Goals: Live a Healthy, Happy, and successful life

Steps:

  • Eat healthier food
  • Buy healthier choices or try to
  • Sleep more
  • Learn something new daily
  • Be around people that are positive
  • Community service
  • Volunteer

The above is just an example of how to write things down and simplify them. It will of course look different to you based on your unique values and experiences. I want you to get through or work through whatever it is on your mind, however be honest to yourself. Use goals that are SMART goals. Be sure its achieved with minimal distractions. Then you can step it up.

Creating a life’s value stream can be a helpful tool for anyone. You can clarify priorities and make sure you’re spending the time on the right things. There’s a really good book I recommend by Dan Heath. It aligns with my day to day profession of coaching data, lean, and change management. However get the book and I think you’ll see the value in looking at your life stream from the perspective of problem solvers.

Remember Jack Sparrow said it best. Sometimes the problem isn’t the problem, the problem is your attitude about the problem. It may not be a problem to solve when it comes to your life stream, it may just be that you needed to get your thoughts on paper.
