What was the best compliment you’ve received?

The title of the daily prompt blog reflects something that was said to me as a young baseball player. My coach said, “Great job bud!” After I fielded a winning double play from second base. He spoke about the importance of your effort, shows your performance is based on your personality and character.

Introduction

Have you ever wondered what makes you unique and different from others? Your personality and character are the two main traits that shape who you are. These traits influence how you interact with people, handle situations, and make decisions. For this daily prompt we are going to explore the difference between personality and character, how they can make you stand out, and real-world success stories of individuals who possess these traits.

What’s the Difference between Personality and Character?

Let’s start by discussing the two. Personality is the combination of traits, behaviors, and attitudes that define you as a person. It’s what makes you stand out from others and is often visible to the people around you. In contrast, character is the moral and ethical values that guide your actions and decisions. It’s the internal compass that shapes your behavior and determines how you act on your beliefs.

As a young child we don’t really consider the conversation about the importance of personality or behavior. Typically our parents would teach habits or behaviors we should practice. We don’t always listen to our parents, however I believe some of the outcomes of us as an adult stems from the beginnings of our lives and how we interpret and internalize the teachings.

How Personality and Character Set You Apart

Your personality and character can make you stand out in many ways. For example, people with a charismatic personality tend to be more effective communicators and natural leaders. As Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” A strong character, on the other hand, leads to trustworthiness, dependability, and respect. As Abraham Lincoln said, “Reputation is the shadow. Character is the tree.”

Charismatic leader is what I’ve been called as a coach and facilitator during work events. This is something that can be good and bad. Some don’t care for overly positive and energetic individuals and some want them. Ask yourself what works for you and what does not work for you. I’ve seen the good and the bad of being Charismatic, however its who I am.

Real-World Success Stories

Many successful individuals have credited their achievements to their personality and character. For example, Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, was known for his charismatic personality and innovative mindset. He once said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” (“Steve Jobs, Tim Cook, and Apple’s Innovation Premium”) Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, has a strong character and is known for his perseverance and determination. He once said, “If something is important enough, even if the odds are stacked against you, you should still do it.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, your personality and character are crucial traits that influence who you are and can make you stand out in life. As you work on developing these traits, keep in mind the wise words of Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Embrace your unique traits and let them help you make a lasting impact in your personal and professional life.
