Dear 18 year old me

Lessons Learned along the Way

It’s me, your 40-year-old self, and I’ve been reflecting on my journey from then to now. As I think about what advice I would give to my younger self, there are a few things that come to mind.

Firstly, I want to encourage you to take risks and pursue your passions. At 18, you have so many interests and dreams, from writing and poetry to medicine and law. While it’s important to explore your options and take calculated risks, don’t be afraid to follow your heart. For example, back then you loved writing, but you didn’t think it could lead to a sustainable career. However, now you know that there are so many opportunities in the field of writing, including freelance writing, content creation, and even writing for social media.

Secondly, I want to remind you to prioritize your education. While it’s important to pursue your passions, gaining the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in your desired field is equally important. For example, back then you studied psychology and law, but you also studied acting and computer science. While all of these subjects were interesting to you, now you know that a focused approach to education is important for building a career. You can always explore your interests on the side, but make sure you have a solid foundation in your chosen field.

Thirdly, I want to encourage you to be kind to yourself and not be afraid to make mistakes. Life is full of ups and downs, and it’s important to learn from our failures and grow from our experiences. For example, back then you partied a lot and sometimes let it interfere with your studies. However, now you know that making mistakes is a natural part of life, and it’s how you learn and grow from those mistakes that matters.

Lastly, I want to remind you to stay curious and keep learning. With the wealth of information available on the web today, you have access to a world of knowledge and resources at your fingertips. For example, back then, the internet was just starting to become a popular resource for learning and research. Now, you can find online courses, forums, and communities that cater to your interests and provide valuable insights and perspectives.

In conclusion, if I could talk to my 18-year-old self, I would remind him to take risks, prioritize his education, be kind to himself, and never stop learning. These are the lessons that have helped me to become the person I am today, and I hope they can help you on your journey from then to now.
